I have always been a “dabbler” in creating wood pieces. Growing up I worked in the family business building canoes, but my exposure was primarily in the hull construction and the wood shop was left for more experienced people to put the final touches on. But working with wood has always been a passion.
While raising my three beautiful kids with a wonderful wife the creative ideas were taken over by more rewarding tasks with the exception of an occasional piece of furniture here and there many of the tools just collected dust. Now a few years older and just a little wiser this wonderful family has been helping me make this dream a reality.
While I have created many pieces of furniture, I find it most rewarding creating useful pieces of art on the wood lathe. Making furniture one has a plan, measurements and specific sizes required to develop a beautiful piece. In essence you have wood that needs to be molded if you will into a predetermined object.
Turning something on a lathe is much different. I begin with a raw piece of wood, usually about the size of a piece of firewood. After studying the grain, bark, knots, or any unusual patterns I then have an idea where to begin. The end product often is not known until it is finished, the only thing know is the final product will likely be round. Rather than making the piece of wood into something we remove the part that doesn’t belong revealing a final piece.
All our wood is obtained locally and from trees that have already been removed. Many times, we acquire from logging remains, downed trees from a storm or unique pieces found while hiking. All items intended for food use are treated with mineral oil and safe unless otherwise indicated. While we have a large supply of our own wood, if someone has a piece they would like something sentimental created that is always an option.
